Lincoln and the Railroads

Lincoln often rode the railroads which were the preferred long distance mode of travel in his day.

As a young lawyer, he rode the Lexington & Ohio when visiting Mary's family in Lexington.

He provided legal council, representing both the Rock Island Railroad and the Illinois Central Railroad.

As President he signed the 1863 bill that created the Transcontinental railroad.

He rode a train to Washington to be sworn into office.

He took the train to Gettysburg for his immortal Gettysburg Address.

After his assassination was carried back to Illinois on a Presidential Funeral Train.
